2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Engine

Specifically reinforced aluminum spaceframe, low curb weight

In addition to maximum comfort, a key factor in driving pleasure in the new SLS AMG Roadster has outstanding performance. The reason for this is an innovative body design: the chassis and body made of aluminum design that combines intelligent lightweight construction with high durability. At curb weight of 3661 kg (estimated) Roadster only 88 pounds heavier than the coupe. The result is a remarkable power to weight ratio of 6.5 pounds per horsepower.

To achieve the same level of dynamics - no fixed roof, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster includes several features specifically designed to strengthen the body, including side skirts with larger wall thickness and additional cameras. Dashboard cross-member is supported against the frame of the windscreen and the central tunnel of the additional racks, and a curved rack between the soft-top and tank strengthens the rear axle. The absence of a roof and gull-wing doors means that the open-top SLS AMG is the strengthening of cross-over seats to support fixed rollover protection system. It also contains 250-watt subwoofer explosion & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system.

All this prevents unwanted vibrations from the beginning, and eliminates the need for additional, weight increasing vibration dampers, which are often found in open sports cars. Weight-optimized aluminum frame weighs 536 pounds, tipping the scales at just 4.5 pounds more than the gullwing model.

Intelligent mix of materials and a low center of gravity

50 percent of cleverly designed, and weight-optimized aluminum frame is made of aluminum, 26 percent of the aluminum sheet, 18 percent of cast aluminum and 6 percent were. The maximum passenger safety requires the use of ultra-high strength, heat-formed steel pillars.

The whole car was designed to achieve the lowest possible center of gravity. This applies to the lowest point of connection of the transmission and axles, as well as the location of the rigid structure of the body that was as low as possible. Examples include hard to bend and twist ties between the front and back of the cage and the safety of passengers, which were designed to use the power of paths that are as low as possible.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Engine

Powerful AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with 563 hp

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster has the same muscular engine, gull-wing model. 6.3-liter V8 with a maximum output of 563 hp at 6800 rpm makes open-top SLS one of the most powerful sports cars in its segment. Its power to weight ratio of 6.5 pounds per horsepower. This naturally aspirated engine produces maximum torque of 479 lb-ft at 4750 rpm. Convertible SLS AMG accelerates from zero to 60 miles / h in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km / h in 3.8 seconds) and top speed is 197 miles / h / 317 km / h (electronically limited) - this means that roadster has almost identical performance wing of a seagull.

High-revving 6.3-liter V8 engine has the typical characteristics of powerful engine racing. It responds instantly and effortlessly to accelerator movements. The use of dry sump lubrication system can significantly lower the installation in a car that has a low center of gravity for higher lateral acceleration and thrilling driving dynamics.

Achieving the required targets fuel consumption

Despite his uncompromising sportiness, fuel consumption has also been considered. SLS AMG consumes 13.2 liters per 100 kilometers (NEDC combined), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 308 grams per kilometer. Efficiency improvements include familiar AMG-exclusive, friction optimized two-wire arc-spray coating on the cylinder walls, as well as on-demand card optimized oil supply and intelligent control of the generator: when an overflow phase motor, the kinetic energy is used to recharge the battery, and not just wasted heat. On the other hand, the generator is switched to idle during acceleration, thus reducing the load on the engine. Sophisticated technology allows the catalytic converter current and future emission standards such as Euro 5, LEV 2 and ULEV that must be met.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Front view

Rev-matching transmission with transaxle configuration and torque tube

AMG 6,3-liter V8 engine delivers its abundant power to the rear through an ultra-light carbon-fiber box driveshaft - similar to the setup used in the DTM C-Class car racing tour. On comparing the transmission is mounted on the rear (CAT), and connected to the casing of the engine with torque tube. Carbon shaft rotates at engine speed at the time of the pipe. The advantages of this complex solutions lie in the tight coupling between the engine and transmission, and, in turn, support the optimal power and torque.

SPEEDSHIFT DCT AMG 7-speed sports transmission boasts faster shifting gears without losing traction - in just 100 milliseconds. The driver a choice of four different driving modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), «S» (Sport), "S +" (Sport plus) or "M" (Manual). In sport, sport and manual modes, plus automatic mapping of function is activated, all modes can be selected via a convenient knob AMG DRIVE. RACE START function ensures optimum traction at full power launches off the ground - as well as mechanical differential lock, which is built into a compact body transfer.

Complex circuit suspension with double wishbone axle

The front mid-engine configuration, plus a box provides the perfect front / rear weight distribution from 47 to 53 percent. Mounting the engine behind the front axle made a perfect driving dynamics with precise steering, excellent agility, low inertia for a spontaneous change of direction, and outstanding traction. All four wheels are on the double-wishbone with a track rod technology, which has proved to be right up to Formula 1 motor racing. With double-wishbone axle, the location of the wheels and suspension functions remain separate, spring / depreciation rack supported on the lower wishbone. Double wishbone setup with the collapse of its high rigidity and a positive track is a wheel with minimal elastic movements, providing the driver optimum road contact feel when driving on the limit.

Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers front and back are made entirely from forged aluminum - a significant reduction in unsprung masses, this configuration also noticeably improves suspension response. Wheelbase 105.5 inches, not only leads to an outstanding straight-line stability, but also low-load on the wheel changes, which significantly reduces the tendency of the vehicle to dive and squat under braking and acceleration. Wide track - 66.2 inches front, 65.1 inches rear - ensures a lower wheel load shifts from internal to external rotation of the wheel when providing tires to save more grip.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Interior

New Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension

The new AMG sports suspension adaptive electronically controlled damping available as an attractive alternative to the standard suspension, AMG sport. This gives the damping characteristics to be changed at the touch of a button. Using the buttons on the AMG DRIVE UNIT, the driver can choose his own suspension settings. There are three modes: "comfort", "Sport" and "Sport Plus". The current mode is displayed on the instrument cluster.

"Comfort" provides a sensitive response to the soft damping characteristics, and in the "Sport" mode, the shock absorbers have much stiffer response, depending on road conditions. This not only leads to improved road contact, but also effectively suppresses body roll and pitching. "Sports Plus" is ideal for demanding laps on the track: in addition to higher braking force, the regime comes to the specific control algorithms, which were made specifically for sporty driving. New, variable suspension also will be optionally available for SLS AMG coupe in the future.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Rear Angle

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece braking system

AMG a powerful braking system with two parts of the brake discs on the front ensures extremely short braking distances, even with huge loads. The red-painted brake calipers on all four corners are available as an option. Additional ceramic two-piece brake discs with even more to provide even better braking. Ceramic brake discs perform at even higher operating temperatures due to their greater rigidity, all coupled with impressive weight loss by about 40 percent. Reducing unsprung mass to further enhance both comfort and grip, and reduced rotating mass on the front axle provides more direct steering response.

Lightweight construction was the key when it comes to wheels: alloy wheels with innovative flows forming principle reduce unsprung weight, improving driving performance and suspension comfort. In addition to the standard AMG twin 5-spoke alloy wheels, a 7-spoke wheels, which is available as a no cost option. Weight-optimized 10-spoke forged wheels available as an option. 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear) is designed specifically for the SLS AMG ensure optimum performance. Tire pressure monitoring system is standard to constantly monitor tire pressure of all four wheels, with a separate display for each tire.

Mercedes A-Class

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a mini MPV produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz. The first generation (W168) was introduced in 1997, and the all-new second generation model (W169) appeared in late 2004. It is available as a three or five-door mini MPV. It is Mercedes' entry level model in most of its worldwide markets, though not in North America or India; the B-Class is the entry model in China, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Mexico, and the C-Class is the entry model in the US and India.

Mercedes A Class Specification

Production of the W168 A-Class began in 1997. Its front engine, front wheel drive layout was quite unusual for Mercedes. To date, about 1.6 million units have been sold worldwide.

One innovation of the W168 was a frontal-impact absorption system called the "Sandwich" (see patents DE4326 9 and DE4400132 in the name of Mercedes-Benz). In the event of a violent frontal impact, the engine and transmission would slide underneath the floor below the pedals rather than entering the passenger compartment.

The W168 became infamous in 1997 after flipping over during the traditional "moose test" performed by the Swedish automobile publication Teknikens Värld. According to the report, the W168 overturned when maneuvering to avoid the "moose". Mercedes initially denied the problem, but then took the surprising step of recalling all units sold to date (2,600) and suspending distribution until the problem was solved by adding electronic stability control and modifying the suspension.

2009 Mercedes A Class Special

Driving assistance
The car is designed according to Mercedes-Benz concept of 'Touch And Feel' (TAF).

The multi-function steering wheel places controls for the radio, telephone, and other systems conveniently within reach of the thumbs of the driver. Power steering (standard feature) aids control of the automobile, with its behaviour varying according to the vehicle's speed.

The Mercedes COMAND APS is a navigation system which provides directions via GPS. The radio unit also provides DVD and telephone functionality, with various versions available (standard Audio 20 radio/single CD, Audio 50 APS or COMAND APS).

The Parktronic system provides audio and visual signals to indicate how far the car is from an obstacle.

The A-class optionally includes a "Light & Sight" package which includes bi-xenon HID headlamps with gas-discharge bulbs; cornering lights (main-beam headlamps at road junctions and tight corners); "Headlamp Assist, which automatically turns on the lights when needed; and a rain sensor that adjusts wiper speed depending on rainfall intensity.

As a standard feature, when entering a tunnel or an underground garage the car goes into "tunnel mode", where all windows and the panoramic sliding sunroof are closed.

Mercedes A-Class Interior

Temperature control
The standard temperature control system has separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger sides, and includes a "Heater Booster System" that can flood the interior of the car with hot air.

The optional Themotronic system maintains and regulates the temperature in accordance with a set of sensors that measure temperature, sunlight, humidity and pollutant levels in the ambient air.

Safety
A number of new features were made available in the W169 model.

The biggest was the immediate fitment of a newly invented device, Electronic Stability Control. ESP is standard on every Mercedes-Benz (produced after 1999).

The car is constructed with high-strength steel alloys with bonded joints. It has a large number of airbags including optional rear side airbags (for side-impacts in the backseats), optional side-curtain airbags, and standard head and thorax-protection side airbags. The front airbags are adaptive with two-stage gas generators operating according to the severity of accident.

The force exerted by the seat belt system during a collision adapts dynamically depending upon the collision characteristics. The 'active' head restraints (standard for driver and front passenger) give enhanced protection from neck injury, especially during rear collisions.

The angle of the A-pillar is flatter than the windshield angle.

Mercedes A-Class Interior

Passenger and cargo space

The cargo capacity of the W169 was increased by 15 percent compared with the W168. The seats can be moved and configured in various ways:
EASY-ENTRY: Front seats slides forwards with the backrest folded forwards to afford the rear seat passengers more room for getting in and out. (standard on three-door)
EASY-VARIO: Both rear-seat cushion sections are folded forward, while the luggage compartment floor can be set to one of two different heights. (standard on five-door; optional on three-door)
EASY-VARIO-PLUS: Both rear-seat cushion and the front passenger seat are folded forward. Increases load capacity to as much as 1995 litres. (optional on five-door)

Engine and drive system
The 200 Turbo version is characterized by its dual exhaust

Seven types of motors are available, and all are four-cylinders: four petrol (gasoline) (A150, A170, A200, A200Turbo) and three diesel (160CDI, 180CDI, 200CDI) partnered with either 5 or 6-speed manual gearbox. A continuously variable transmission system called "Autotronic Constantly Variable Transmission" (CVT) is an optional feature.

The petrol A200 Turbo provides 193 hp (144 kW) and 280 N·m (207 lb·ft) of torque (rotational force); the diesel A200 CDI has 140 hp (104 kW) and 300 N·m (221 lb·ft).

It is estimated that the W169 engines provide a 40% increase in power and a 10% decrease in fuel consumption compared to W168 engines.

Mercedes A-Class

The most powerful model can take the car from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.0 seconds, and has a top speed of 218 km/h (135 mph). The newly developed direct-injection CDI diesel units use a common-rail direct injection system that improves fuel consumption and reduces exhaust emissions and noise levels.

All the engines meet the tight EU4 emissions limits. A particulate filter system is available as an option for the diesel units which reduces the particulate emissions by about 99% without the need for additives.

The A-Class is a front wheel drive car and features traction control (ASR) as standard, as well as electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes (ABS).

Handling is improved by precision tracking and anti-roll support, and by a Parabolic Rear Axle.

A "Selective Damping System", in which the shock absorber forces respond differently according to conditions, is standard. For example, under normal conditions it operates at soft absorption; while cornering at speed it changes to full damping force.

The W169 optionally comes with light-alloy wheels, with a run-flat feature, Tirefit tire sealant and a tire-pressure-loss warning device.

Tire sizes are:
185/65 R 15 with wheel trim (classic model)
185/65 R 15 light-alloy wheels (elegance model)
195/55 R 16 light-alloy wheels (avantgarde model)

Mercedes A-Class

The 2009 A-Class (W169 Facelift, shown in the spring of 2008 and on the road that year) features redesigned front and rear bumpers, new tail lamps and headlights, new grille, new exterior mirrors, a restyled interior design and new upholsteries and colors. The 2009 A-Class was released alongside the refreshed 2009 M-Class and B-Class. The car is also available with Active Park Assist, which enables the car to parallel park itself, with only throttle and brake inputs required from the driver.

Production of the W169 facelift will begin in June 2011, for introduction as a 2012 model.

It has been reported in the press that a successor to the W169 will be launched during 2011 and will feature a significantly different body design more akin to that of cars like the Volkswagen Golf rather than continuing the "tall but small" sandwich floor design of the first two generations of A-Class. This would move the A-class into small family car class rather than staying in the supermini class..

Mercedes A-Class

The Mercedes A-Class E-Cell was introduced in September 2010 and debuted at the October 2010 Paris Motor Show. The E-Cell has a range of 200 kilometres (124.3 mi) capable of developing a peak output of 70 kW (94 hp), a continuous power rating of 50 kW (67 hp) and a maximum torque of 290 N·m (214 lb-ft). The Mercedes A-Class E-Cell can accelerate from 0-60 km/h (37 mph) in 5.5 seconds, and its top speed is 150 kilometres per hour (93 mph).

Tesla Motors, as part of its collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, is building electric powertrain components for the E-Cell. The 36 kW battery contains approximately 4,000 individual lithium-ion cells.

Mercedes has developed a modular system for electric vehicles with battery and fuel-cell. This system allows the efficient use of shared parts in all the brand's electric vehicles. Thanks to the modular approach the electric drive of the A‑Class E‑Cell is also used in the B‑Class F‑Cell, and the energy storage units in the A‑Class EV are the same as the battery in the Smart fortwo electric drive.

A limited production of 500 A-Class E-Cell electric cars will be built, for trial purposes, at the Mercedes Rastatt plant, near Stuttgart beginning in September 2010. As part of a demonstration program, the cars will be leased to selected customers in several European countries, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Daimler is not planning to sell the electric version outside of Europe.

The SLK is a compact roadster manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in three generations; R170 launched in 1996, the R171 in 2004 and R172 in 2011.

As one of the first modern retractable hardtop convertibles, the SLK followed the 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder and preceded other retractable hardtops such as the Peugeot 206cc, Lexus SC, Pontiac G6 and the Chrysler Sebring. The SLK Vario-roof was first shown on the SLK II concept car at the 1994 Paris Motor Show. The car went on sale two years later in Europe, and in 1997 in the US. The SLK is built in Bremen, Germany.

The designation SLK derives from the company's design mission to create a roadster that was at once sporty, light and short — in German: Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz.
